MZ666: How was the band formed?
J and I had been performing together
for quite some time. After parting ways with our original vocalist, Nate Jones, and still playing with
our original drummer, Caleb Trevino, we met Benji. After practicing with Benji for some time Caleb decided
to move on and that's when we met the 6 foot monster we all know as AC. That's the exciting story.
MZ666: Where did the band name originate? The origin of our name is actually rather interesting.
The original band in which J and I were in was called, "Jated Cayne". Same pronunciation, different spelling.
We can thank J's father for that along with things that he might have done during the 70's that I can't mention
at this time. The short story goes like this; the J was for Justin (J), the "ate" was part of Nate's name, the original
vocalist. The "C" was of course derived from Caleb, and the "ayne" was out of my name. Then we started playing
with Benji and AC, and AC informed us that Jaded wasn't spelled with a "T", damn Illinois schools, and the K was the result
of alcohol and drugs.
MZ666:Tell me about your band - How long have you been together, how did you all meet, etc? We've all been performing together for about 2 years. Some of us went to school together and hell, some
of us even graduated. We really have got a slew of different influences and life experiences. With ages spanning
from 21 to 28, we've all had different lifestyles. No matter what our differences, when we're on a stage everything
else stops.
MZ666: How would you best describe your style of music? Our style of music can be best described with the generic label of "Metal". As I previously stated with
our age differences comes our different musical influences. We have times when we can break into the most brutal East
Coast hardcore groove you've ever heard from some short haired, punk ass kids; and then their are those times when we can
produce a melody that belongs on pop record. We try and get things fresh and moving, both for us and the fans.
Nobody likes to stand around.
MZ666: What would be your ultimate gig line-up?
Well, I'm going to assume you want us to put together
a line up of our favorite bands. I'll try my best and speak for everyone. It would have to be, Killswitch
Engage, Lamb of God, Slipknot, Hatebreed, Deftones and Sepultura/Soulfly (as long as it's Max!). We all
look up to these bands and appreciate everything they've done and are doing for metal. From the underground to
the mainstream, they're keeping the fight alive. The list could go on and on but your probably not giving me an Ozfest
bill to line-up.
MZ666: Who writes your lyrics, music and what subjects
do they deal with? Lyrics are all handled by Benji. He truly
has a gifted mind when it comes to words. He doesn't speak of anything but life. His lyrics are not about mom
and dad, or that dumb bitch that dumped him two years ago that he can't let go. They are about what life hands us all.
The music comes from all of our sick minds. We all stuff ourselves in this dark room and just start jamming and occasionally
we make a song. Are theory is don't push anything. We've always figured that the music will right itself;
how we're feeling and what we're listening to at the time is always a good guide.
MZ666:What is your favorite song to perform? Why? I
tell you what, we've all got our favorites. Benji enjoys "Point", and AC is always up for "Winter in May". But
here is the ironic thing. We all love every song we've written and of course we've got our personal favorites,
but as you can ask any Jaded fan we all get our groove on for the occasional rendition of "Roots, Bloody Roots". Yeah,
it's a cover but god damn! that's a good tune and if you can't bounce your head to that one, than get the fuck out of the
pit!!
MZ666:Musically are you self taught/schooled? I think that I'm the only one that was schooled
at any point. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take guitar classes in high school. It was that
or drugs and I figured a guitar would have been cheaper. As for the other guys; they were all self taught and of course
we are all students of music to this day. You never stop learning.
MZ666:How many releases do you have out right now? Currently
we have two pieces of music printed. A self titled E. P. that was done way back in '02/'03. Unfortunately, we
no longer perform any of the songs on that disc. I guess you could say that we just sort of grew out of them.
We also have a 2 song demo disc floating around. And you guess it, we no longer perform those songs as well. They
are still available to those of you that are interested. We don't have any immediate plans of going back into the studio.
Although, I'm sure the future holds some studio time for us.
MZ666:Anything
you guys do before a show to get pumped up?
We drink, do drugs, and try not to get kicked out
of the venue before our set. But on a serious not, we just focus on what we've got to do. The occasional drink
might pass our lips to loosen up a bit, but other than that we're pretty well mannered. We just get ourselves limber
and hope to God our necks don't snap off. Like I said before standing around isn't acceptable, it doesn't matter if
your on the stage or in the pit.
MZ666:What was your most memorable show? Why? I think that we would all have to agree that show would be our first show with,
"Disasterpiece". The one and only Slipknot tribute out of Chicago, Illinois fronted by Chris Green(#7).
Or as Mick Thompson would call him, "Mini Mick". We had just come off of a 8 week break and during the break we just
busted our ass to write new material. Not much of a break huh? This was the first time we had ever performed "Roots,
Bloody Roots" and we we're fortunate enough to be joined on stage by #7 of Disasterpiece, as well as a few other
member and about 25 drunken fans. Everyone else just stayed on the floor and tried their hardest to catch the others.
It was just a great show and was everything metal.
MZ666:Since the death of the great(Dimebag)has this changed your minds any differently about playing
live shows? I tell you what, we've have all had this discussion with
one another and other band members in the area. I really can't say that any of us our scared, sure it could happen to
anyone at anytime, but we've all got to remember those were some pretty excruciating circumstances that night. You can't
walk on to a stage and be scared of anything, and I do mean anything.
MZ666:What are some of your favorite place's to play? Our
favorite would definitely have to be the Canopy Club in Urbana, Illinois. It's in our backyard so we're fortunate enough
to have our fans come out and support us on a regular basis. The club is good to us and the place has just got a lot
of history. Not only have we played the Canopy with Disasterpiece, as I mention earlier, we've also been fortunate
to play with Sevendust on that same stage as well as V Shaped Mind. Those are just a couple of
the Nationals that we we're fortunate enough to play with while they were in town so you can just imagine the other
talent that has been on that stage. I would definitely recommend attending a show there at least once
in your lifetime.
MZ666:Do you have any advice for people starting a band? The best advice I can give to anyone wanting to start a band is you better be ready to work if you want something
out of it. If you lazy, if you don't like people, if you don't want to do the dirty work. Find a new hobby.
This is a hard business, especially at this level. You've got to bust your ass and keep your head held high, even through
the bad. Find people that want to work as hard as you do and just go at it full steam, don't stop for anything or anyone.
Oh, and most importantly, Take care of your peeps! Take care of your fans and take care of your own, (other bands, club
employees and the other bands), its a brotherhood and we've got to stick together.
MZ666:What is your impression of the Metal music scene? I would like to tell you that it's perfect, fun, and all about sex, drugs and Rock n' Roll, but then you'd
call me a fucking liar and stop the interview right here. It's tuff, it really is. On the local level things are
real hit and miss. It seems like people go through trends where they love the shit and then someone changes the dial
for a while. We are fortunate enough to have a scene that is strong and full of talent and diverse bands. Playing
with locals like Alchymist, Justify the Means, Lidlifter, Pariah, and Dropsixx, just to name a few. We all share a lot
of the same fan base which helps us all and thank god for that. We might all be in trouble without one another.
One a bigger level, we should all be kissing the feet of guys the likes of Jamie Jasta, and bands like Lamb of God.
These are the people and the bands that keep metal going and keep the underground alive. You'll never hear these bands
on the radio but somehow they can fill an arena, have thousands of people chanting they're lyrics, and single handedly start
a music revolution. I believe that the days of selling a record at Best Buy are over, but thanks to the showmanship
and the great performances that many of today's bands can produce we will all have something to look forward to.
MZ666:Who are some of the influences on your band? I
guess I kind of jumped the gun earlier huh? Well, aside from the bands mentioned earlier I can think of a few others
to mention. Taproot, 36 Crazyfist, Chimarai, God Forbid, One Side Zero, Slayer, 40 Below Summer, and countless others.
We try and listen to them all.
MZ666:
